In the world of compact wallets, being small and slim has become the norm.
What remains difficult to achieve alongside these qualities, however, is ease of use, sufficient storage capacity, and refined design.

In particular, usability and capacity are often in direct trade-off with compactness. In most cases, prioritizing one inevitably means compromising the other.
Defying this conventional contradiction, SAKU successfully combines both. It is a bi-fold wallet that has become synonymous with MOKU.

Four Key Features of SAKU ver.3

Functionality ①: Compact and Slim

The wallet measures 93 mm × 93 mm (3.66 in × 3.66 in).

Even when fully loaded with 8 cards, 10 banknotes, and 15 coins, the thickness remains just 15 mm (0.59 in).
At maximum capacity, the thickness stays under 20 mm (0.79 in)—approximately the same thickness as a typical smartphone—making it easy to carry in pockets or small bags.

Functionality ②: High Capacity

SAKU ver.3 offers a generous maximum capacity of 8 cards, 20 coins, and 25 banknotes, making it suitable for use as a primary wallet even when traveling.

Most compact wallets typically hold around 5–6 cards and about 15 coins (based on our internal research). In contrast, SAKU delivers superior storage capacity without sacrificing its compact size.

While the difference may appear minimal at first glance, anyone accustomed to using mini or compact wallets will appreciate how much more convenient it is to carry just two or three additional cards or coins when needed.

Functionality ③: Easy Access to Coins

By gently pressing both sides of the coin pocket, the opening pops open smoothly, allowing easy access to your coins.

Many compact wallets achieve their small size by sacrificing usability. As a result, their coin compartments tend to have small openings, forcing users to tolerate the inconvenience of difficult access.

With SAKU, there is no need to compromise.

The coin pocket is positioned at the top of the wallet and features a unique structure that opens widely when the sides are lightly pinched. This design is protected by a registered design patent, enabling quick and effortless access to coins without obstruction.

There is one principle we firmly believe in:
a shallow coin pocket is far easier to use than a deep one.

Many wallets feature deep, card-sized coin pockets. While they may hold more coins, coins tend to sink to the bottom, requiring you to reach deep inside with your fingers—making them difficult to retrieve.

Like all moku wallets, SAKU is intentionally designed with a shallow coin pocket, sized so that a ¥500 coin (approximately 26.5 mm / 1.04 inches) fits snugly. This ensures coins remain visible and easy to pick up.

Now that manufacturers have realized that this structure is the right one, they are gradually making it shallower. This is an important point to check when choosing a wallet.

Five Exclusive Features of the Plus Model

1. Fully Lined, Double-Layer Construction (Musō Finish)

Top: Standard version / Bottom: Plus version (this product)

In the standard version of SAKU, the reverse side of the exterior leather (the flesh side) is left unlined.
The Plus version, however, features a fully lined construction using the same leather as the exterior, creating a clean, refined finish.

This double-layer structure not only enhances the overall appearance but also significantly improves durability, especially in areas that experience the most stress during daily use.

Because this construction requires additional leather as well as extra bonding and stitching processes, the Plus version is priced higher than the standard model.
That said, we are confident it delivers value well beyond the difference in price.

2. Luxuriously Lined with Rugato

The interior of the standard (previous) model was crafted using Buttero leather.
For this edition, however, we have upgraded the entire interior to Rugato, a premium Belgian leather that pairs exceptionally well with cordovan.

The distinctive “tiger” pattern of Rugato—its natural striping—beautifully complements the crystal-clear luster of cordovan, creating a combination that is nothing short of luxurious.

3.Unchanged Slimness Despite the Double-Layer (Fully Lined) Construction

Top: Standard model / Bottom: Plus model

Even with the addition of a lining layer—resulting in a double-layer leather construction—the overall slimness remains unchanged.

In the standard model, the exterior is made from a single piece of leather approximately 1.5 mm (0.06 inches) thick.
In the Plus model, two thinner layers of leather—1.0 mm (0.04 inches) and 0.5 mm (0.02 inches)—are carefully laminated together. As a result, the finished thickness remains approximately 1.5 mm (0.06 inches), the same as the standard model.

Achieving this requires additional skiving (leather thinning) processes, increasing both time and craftsmanship involved—but this meticulous attention to detail is one of the defining qualities of the Plus model.

4. Meticulously Finished Edges (Edge Painting)

The finishing process applied to the cut edges of leather is known as edge painting.
In the standard model, a clear edge paint is intentionally used to preserve the natural character and texture of the leather.

In contrast, the Plus model uses custom-mixed edge paint carefully matched to the color of the leather itself. This results in a smoother feel, a more refined and polished appearance, and enhanced durability at the edges.

5. New Logo Design with Foil Stamping

On the standard model, the logo is embossed using a blind stamping technique.
On the Plus model, the logo is finished with gold foil stamping, creating a more refined and luxurious appearance.

Renewed Zipper Design

This model features a newly updated zipper with an original zipper engraved with the MOKU logo.
Beyond functionality, this special specification reflects our dedication to beauty and brand identity, down to the finest details.

The zipper is designed to open only when intentionally pulled, incorporating a lock function that helps prevent accidental opening while inside a bag. This ensures added security and peace of mind during daily use.

Premium, Eco-Conscious Materials

Material 1: Cordovan

Cordovan is derived from the hindquarters of a horse.
Unlike typical leather, which retains the outer surface of the hide, cordovan is crafted by carefully shaving out only a dense internal layer of fiber—known as the “cordovan layer”—which measures just about 2mm in thickness.

Compared to cattle or pigs, horses are far less common in the food supply chain. From that already limited number of hides, only a very small portion can yield cordovan. As a result, cordovan is exceptionally rare and commands a significantly higher material cost.

In Japan, cordovan is widely known as a premium material often used for randoseru—school backpacks carried by elementary students for six years. In other words, it is broadly recognized for its ability to withstand daily, rigorous use over many years.

In fact, members of our own team have used cordovan products for nearly a decade.

In short, cordovan is prized not only for its rarity, but also for its remarkable durability and refined texture. While this inevitably places it at a higher price point, we firmly believe its value far exceeds the cost.

Over time, the cordovan we use develops a richer depth of tone, with its color gradually becoming more subdued and sophisticated through aging.

Though subtle, you can see that the color gradually develops a deeper, richer tone over time.

Material 2: Leather jewel "Lugato"

It is used for interior.

Rugato—often referred to as the “jewel of leather”—is produced by Tannery Mazur, founded in 1873 and the only tannery in Belgium.

The Rugato leather crafted by Mazur comes from the shoulder of cattle and is made using premium Swiss hides sourced from cattle raised in the Alpine region. It is traditionally vegetable-tanned and is known for its transparency, depth of color, and naturally occurring variations in tone.

A defining characteristic of shoulder leather, the pronounced natural grain wrinkles (tora-shiwa), appear as beautiful, organic patterns unique to each piece.

With its refined luster and sense of luxury, Rugato pairs exceptionally well with cordovan (horse leather), often regarded as one of the finest leathers in the world. Some brands even create hybrid products that combine cordovan and Rugato.

Important Notes on Rugato Leather

The deep natural wrinkles (tora-shiwa), which are a signature feature of Rugato leather, vary significantly from piece to piece. Some hides may show almost no visible wrinkles, while others display very strong and pronounced grain patterns. When compared side by side, these variations can appear almost as if they are entirely different leathers.

What, then, accounts for the remaining 0.1 that prevented a perfect score?

After carefully reviewing customer feedback on SAKU ver.2, we identified the following areas for improvement:

・A desire for a slightly larger bill holder
・Concern that cards might slip out from the side
・Difficulty securely holding cards when carrying fewer cards (a challenge inherent to high-capacity designs)

By addressing and refining each of these points, SAKU ver.3 has finally reached its most complete form to date.

Improvement 1: Enlarged Bill Holder

In SAKU ver.2, the bill holder was intentionally designed to be slightly smaller, as making it too large can make inserting and removing banknotes less smooth. However, with smaller banknotes—such as Japanese ¥1,000 notes—this design required the notes to be inserted carefully to ensure they were held securely, which became a point of concern.

Based on feedback from many customers, we refined the design for ver.3. The size of the bill holder has been carefully adjusted to achieve an ideal balance between ease of insertion and secure holding, resulting in a more comfortable and reliable user experience.

Improvement 2: Redesigned Card Slot for Better Grip and Right-Handed Use

The card compartment has been further refined to strike an optimal balance between ease of access and secure holding.

Previously, the design assumed card removal from the left side for right-handed users. In this new version, the opening has been repositioned to the right side, allowing cards to be inserted and removed more naturally with the dominant hand.

Some may be concerned that right-side access could interfere with the coin pocket; however, as shown in the video above, cards are first pulled upward and then spread open, eliminating any interference and ensuring smooth operation.

In SAKU ver.2, priority was placed on quick access, which resulted in shorter side walls in the card compartment. Depending on usage, this could occasionally cause concern about cards slipping out.
In the current version, the side walls have been extended to significantly improve card retention, greatly reducing the risk of cards falling out while maintaining excellent usability.

Improvement 3: Optional Solution for Those Who Carry Fewer Cards

SAKU is designed to hold up to eight cards. However, when carrying fewer cards, the cards may not be held firmly in place and can shift inside the wallet. While they will not fall out when the wallet is closed, there may be a concern that cards could slip out when opened.

To address this, we offer an optional accessory designed specifically for users who carry fewer cards.
This card-shaped key case can be used when carrying four cards or fewer and is capable of holding up to two keys, improving overall stability inside the wallet.
