Characteristics and Care of Kurozan Leather
The Unique Character of Kurozan Leather

Often referred to as the "Black Diamond of Leather," Kurozan leather is a rare and highly prized material known for its distinctive brilliance. Its surface sparkles as if scattered with countless diamond particles, creating a striking and elegant appearance.
Kurozan leather is not only beautiful but exceptionally durable. Its remarkable resistance to abrasion is rooted in a long history—during Japan's Sengoku period, it was even used in the armor of samurai warriors.
The production process is equally extraordinary. Skilled craftsmen spend approximately four months applying and polishing layers of lacquer by hand. By repeatedly coating the grain surface with lacquer over an extended period, the leather develops a dense structure with remarkable resilience and strength.
Today, Sakamoto Shoten is the only tannery capable of producing authentic Kurozan leather. Their craftsmanship represents the pinnacle of Japanese aesthetics and meticulous attention to detail, creating a material that can truly be called "The Leather of Japan."
Born from premium Japanese Black Wagyu hides and generations of artisanal expertise, Kurozan leather carries with it a rich cultural heritage. Understanding the story behind this historic material only deepens one's appreciation for its extraordinary beauty and distinctive luster.
Caring for Kurozan Leather
When Does Kurozan Leather Need Care?
Kurozan leather is highly durable and generally requires minimal maintenance. However, if the lacquered surface becomes worn or develops areas where the finish appears less prominent, proper care can help restore its appearance and reduce the visibility of wear.
For best results, we recommend the following care routine, performed in the order shown below:
1. Brushing
Brushing is one of the most effective ways to remove dust, dirt, and debris that may accumulate on the leather surface or within its natural pores.
While various types of brushes are available, we recommend a horsehair brush. Horsehair provides an ideal balance of firmness and gentleness, allowing you to clean the leather effectively without damaging the surface. It is also widely available at a reasonable price.
Although it may seem like an extra step, brushing should always be done before applying any leather oil or cream. Applying conditioners to a dusty surface can cause dirt and debris to become trapped in the leather, potentially leading to discoloration or premature wear.
Taking a few moments to thoroughly brush the leather before maintenance will help preserve its beauty for years to come.
Horsehair brushes can be easily purchased through online retailers such as Amazon and other leather care suppliers.
2. Wipe with a Soft Dry Cloth
After brushing, gently wipe the grain side (the leather surface) with a soft, dry cloth.
Although moisture from perspiration, humidity, or light rain may not be visible to the naked eye, it can gradually accumulate on the leather. The purpose of this step is to gently absorb and remove that moisture before it affects the leather over time.
Rather than rubbing the surface vigorously, we recommend using light, gentle strokes or softly pressing the cloth against the leather. Treat the leather delicately, allowing the cloth to absorb moisture without unnecessary friction.
When choosing a cloth, pay close attention to the material. A cloth made from 100% cotton is ideal. Synthetic fibers may be abrasive and could potentially cause fine scratches or damage to the leather surface.
Suitable cotton cloths are widely available and can be purchased from a variety of retailers, including MUJI, Amazon, and other leather care suppliers.
3. Apply a Color-Restoring Cream
To maintain the appearance of Kurozan leather, we recommend using a color-restoring cream specifically formulated for Kurozan leather.
Using products designed for other types of leather may not provide the desired results and could affect the unique lacquered finish that gives Kurozan leather its distinctive character.
Our Kurozan Leather Color-Restoring Cream is available as an optional add-on when purchasing a Kurozan leather product from our store. It may also be purchased separately at any time.
By applying the cream as needed, you can help preserve the leather's beautiful appearance and keep minor signs of wear less noticeable over time.
