"High-quality, earth-friendly materials"

Choosing materials with a high-quality texture that makes you want to touch them is good for the earth and contributes to a sustainable society.

We carefully select such materials.

A high-quality material that makes you want to touch it

Material 1: Pueblo

This leather is made by Badalassi Carlo using the hides of cows over two years old using the Vacchetta method. The surface is intentionally made rough and fuzzy as a finishing process, making it a very unique leather.

In its initial state, it feels like Japanese paper, and because of its matte texture it has almost no shine, but the more you use it, the surface fibers will flatten out, increasing the shine exponentially and the color will deepen in a short period of time.

The gloss develops very quickly, so the change is dramatic, and the moist, clingy texture that develops with use is another great attraction. This leather is recommended for those who enjoy the aging of leather.

Material 2: Buttero

This leather is made by Conceria Walpier using the shoulder of a steer and is tanned with tannins. Because it is made from the hard shoulder, it is characterized by its firmness and resilience. While this varies from piece to piece, some stripes, which are common on the shoulder, may be present.

It is dyed using superior dyeing techniques, resulting in a beautiful, translucent color while retaining a firm, heavy feel. While not as dramatic as Pueblo, it is a leather that can be enjoyed for its ageing.

Material 3: Noblessacalf

This is genuine leather provided by Perlinger, a famous, long-established tannery that has been producing leather since 1864.

Perlinger combines the leather tanning techniques and experience it has cultivated over 150 years with modern manufacturing methods to consistently supply high-quality leather. Not only is the tannery high quality, but it is also environmentally friendly, earning it high praise from top brands around the world.

The leather has a distinctive feature in that it has a pattern created on the surface by embossing. Because the surface is covered with pigment, water does not easily penetrate, and it is relatively resistant to dirt and abrasion.

Compared to German shrink leather made by the same tannery, it has a slightly glossier and crisper texture.

The aging process is less severe than with Pueblo or Buttero, so it is recommended for those who want to maintain the same texture for a long time.

Material 4: Rugato

Lugato, also known as the jewel of leather, is made by Tannerie Mazur, founded in 1873. They are the only tannery in Belgium. Lugato, made by Mazur, is made from the shoulder part of the cow. Made using high-quality Swiss hides raised around the Alps, and tanned using traditional tannin tanning, it is characterized by its transparency and deep, natural color variations, and the deep, distinctive scarlet wrinkles that are characteristic of the shoulder part, creating a beautiful pattern.

Due to its moderate luster and luxurious feel, it goes well with cordovan (horse leather), which is known as the ultimate leather, and some brands even produce hybrid products that combine cordovan and Lugato.

[Important] Important points to note about Lugato leather: The deep tiger wrinkles that are a characteristic of Lugato vary greatly from piece to piece, with some pieces having no tiger wrinkles at all and others having very pronounced tiger wrinkles, and when compared, they can even appear to be completely different products.

Example of individual differences (the color in the photo is light brown)

We believe that unevenness is the charm of this leather! However, to put it bluntly, it is easy for the leather to turn out differently than expected, so please be aware of this before using this product. We do not accept returns or exchanges for reasons such as "different from what I expected" or "the tattered patterns are stronger than expected."

Furthermore, there is no such thing as a good or bad product if the tiger wrinkles are strong, and each one is unique to each cow, so we hope you will enjoy that individuality. We believe that this is one of the ways to enjoy genuine leather.

If you really want to choose your favorite pattern, we may be able to do so for customers who visit our main store (Mizonokuchi) if we have enough stock. When you order through our online shop, we will leave it up to you, so we hope you will look forward to seeing what pattern you receive.

Material 5: Cordovan

This luxurious bag features cordovan (horse leather), which is considered the "highest quality" among many types of leather and is also known as the diamond of leather, used on the entire exterior.

Cordovan is originally the skin of a horse's buttocks. Unlike typical leather that is tanned leaving the surface intact, cordovan leather is made by scraping out only the "cordovan layer" that is only about 2mm thick, located inside the skin tissue.

Unlike cows and pigs, the amount of horses in circulation for food is extremely small. Cordovan, which can only be obtained in extremely small quantities from this small amount of horse hide, is extremely rare and is characterized by its extremely high material cost.

Cordovan is known for being used in the "randoseru" (school bags) that elementary school students use for six years. This is proof that cordovan is widely known to be able to withstand the harsh conditions of children using it almost every day for six years.

In fact, one of our staff members has been using cordovan products for nearly 10 years. (Please note that durability varies depending on usage and product.)

In other words, cordovan is not only rare, but also has unparalleled quality in terms of durability and texture. The product price is inevitably high, but we believe that it is worth more than that.

The cordovan leather we use in our store ages gradually, becoming more subdued in color and appearing to have a deeper color.

The photo above shows a sample of the burgundy color. The left side is unused, and the right side is after about 6 months of use.
It does add a little depth to the color.

Material 6: Kurozangawa leather

Kurozan leather is a rare, high-quality leather that is also known as the "black diamond of leather."
It shines like diamonds scattered all over the place. It is so durable and resistant to friction that it was even used in the armor of warlords during the Sengoku period.

During the production process, craftsmen spend up to four months applying lacquer to each piece, carefully finishing it one by one. By slowly applying lacquer to the grain surface over and over again, the leather becomes elastic and firm.

Sakamoto Shoten is the only tannery that can produce this historically valuable Kurozan leather. The Kurozan leather produced by Sakamoto Shoten can be said to be the pinnacle of Japanese aesthetic sensibility and exquisite craftsmanship, and can be proudly called "THE Japanese leather."

Kurosanza leather is made from Japanese black beef and the outstanding skills of artisans.
Knowing the background of this historic material makes its brilliance even more beautiful.

Material 7: VeauEpsom

This is embossed leather from male calves. Its luxurious texture makes it a highly sought-after material, often used in items from top brands around the world.

It is durable, water-resistant, and resistant to scratches and scuffs, so it is a material that does not deteriorate over time. It ages less than Pueblo or Buttero, making it a recommended leather for those who want to maintain the same texture for a long time.

Choosing materials that benefit the earth and contribute to a sustainable society

Much genuine leather (leather made from animal skin) is made from animal skin that would otherwise be discarded due to livestock farming, and is said to be more environmentally friendly than discarding it as is.

When trying to achieve a desired texture with leather, chemicals and additives are often used. The manufacturing and processing of leather using chemicals can produce by-products that are not good for the environment.

On the other hand, there is also leather that is processed using ingredients derived from plants. For example, leather processed using only tannins, a type of polyphenol, is called full vegetable tanning, and moku mainly deals in such leather.

Naturally, these high-quality materials tend to be expensive, but we don't compromise on that.
